Why should Enterprises use Linux?
1. Linux has much lower cost as it runs on low cost commodity hardware
Low cost x86 commodity hardware has huge performance and offers much lower costs than propitiatory hardware. For details see:
Example:
The above shows commodity x86 servers have much better price performance than propitiatory platforms. Please note the above shows IBM hardware, yet proprietary hardware from HP, Oracle, etc is also significantly more expensive than commodity hardware.
2. All leading internet companies and startups use Linux:
These organisation have several orders of magnitude higher transitions volumes than the typical large enterprises and require high level of security and redundancy.
2. All leading public cloud infrastructure provider support Linux:
To be able to use leading cloud providers proprietary operating system such as Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, OpenVMS, IBM i/OS, IBM z/OS or any other proprietary can not be used. So if you consider that in the future you may want to migrate workload into the cloud your choices are:
- Linux
- Windows Server
3. Over 80% of all Stock Exchanges run on Linux:
If the largest stock exchanges trust Linux why do enterprise IT shops still run propitiatory operating systems on expensive hardware?
4. Smart organisations choose Linux because it offers better price/performance
- Virtually all internet startups use Linux
- Virtually all Public Cloud is built on Linux
- Virtually all Big Data is built on Linux
- US Department of Defense is has huge Linux infrastructure
- Largest retailer Amazon is built on Linux
- Largest enterprise software company Oracle run Linux internally
5. Over 95% of Top 500 Supercomputers run Linux
6. Linux is well support by application vendors
Today ISVs (Independant Software Vendors) can not ignore Linux, hence all the common enterprise applications are available on Linux including software from Oracle, SAP, IBM, HP, SAS, Symantec, CA, BMC, Quest.
Since Linux is so low cost and easy to deploy many software companies are using Linux as their primary development platform.
7. Linux is the most widely used operating system today
Every Android device (mobile phone, tablet, camera, etc) runs Linux, close to a billion devices as of June 2013:
