Apple is losing the platform war, Apple is losing in growth markets. Does it really matter though? Apple CEO Tim Cook has been quoted saying, “Apple was not interested in selling junk,”..I think Apple painted themselves into a corner as global markets are huge and a lot of really great talent will be developing and innovating on Android platform. Smartphones are now a mature product and we are seeing small incremental innovation, a sign of a commoditised product and as such all prices will come down including smartphones from Apple if Apple choose to be competitive.
Choices for Apple are innovate, compete on price or diminish.
From IDC report:
- Smartphone average selling prices (ASPs) have continued to decline as the appetite for more affordable devices grows. ASPs were down -12.5% in 3Q13, accounting for an average price of $317.
- Phablet ASPs in 3Q13 were notably higher than the market average at $443. However, the 3Q13 ASP was down -22.8% from the $573 phablet ASP in 3Q12.
- Pphablet shipments accounted for 21% of the smartphone market, up from just 3% a year ago. We believe the absence of a large-screen device may have contributed to Apple's inability to grow share in the third quarter."
