Google uses a $70,000 lidar (laser radar) mounted on top of the roof, which creates a map (above). The car is able to compute roughly 750 MB per second to make adjustments based on information supplied by lidar, radar and camera..
Current 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class self driving car:
Mercedes’ self-driving cars use a dual-cameras mounted on the windshield that looks at other vehicles and measures their direction and rate of speed. Radar takes the long-distance view, and another camera that translates red or green lights.
