Cloud configurations
CloudForms delivers real value to existing cloud infrastructures as well as enabling new cloud configurations:
- Virtual
- Reduce the cost of existing VMware cloud infrastructure
- Unify the management of existing multi-hypervisor environments that use VMware, Red Hat or Microsoft
- Private
- Transform existing virtual platforms into Private Clouds
- Build a private Cloud
- Hybrid
- Build a hybrid cloud (private and public cloud)
- Build an Open Hybrid Cloud (OpenStack and Amazon Web Services)
Adaptive Management Platform
CloudForms enables advanced management of an organisation’s Cloud resources and provides answers to key questions such as:
- Where is there excess capacity?
- Where is utilization high, low, and as expected?
- When will additional capacity need to be added?
- What was the impact of VM configuration changes?
- How are VM snapshots affecting capacity and utilization?
- Why is response time increasing if the underlying virtual resources supporting the service haven’t changed?
Forensic configuration management discovery tool
Virtualization and cloud management tools can lose track of what’s happening in the environment, for example, which VMs are being used, how much data they hold, how important that data is and which VMs are not being used, i.e. ‘orphaned’.
CloudForms does not need an agent to be deployed on the cloud manager and guests. Instead, it interrogates at disk file level of all machines - even those that are switched off – and brings together all data in a format that quickly provides insight into what is happening in the environment.
Seamless user self-service portal
CloudForms supports web-based access to your specified service catalogs with role-delegated automated provisioning, quota enforcement, and chargeback across virtualization and cloud platforms, including those from Red Hat, VMware, and Amazon. Microsoft Hyper-V and Open Stack.
Central operations management
CloudForms puts you in control at all times with unified monitoring, management, and automation across enterprise clouds and globally distributed, virtualized datacenters. It provides granular control of workload resources, configurations, capacity, and usage levels, with event timelines, and change and drift tracking.
Complex task and resource orchestration and automation
With CloudForms, resources are automatically optimized via policy-based workload and resource orchestration, ensuring service availability and performance. Resource allocation can be simulated for what-if planning and continuous tracking of workload and consumption levels to allow chargeback, proactive planning and policy creation.
Capacity Management and Planning
Dynamically and automatically ensure the most efficient use of resources, including the capability to:
- Discover and track resource changes.
- Provision and de-provision resources based on policies and demand.
- Identify the current condition of resources and the best fit for new workloads across compute, storage, and network resources.
- CloudForms also aids planning for future resource needs based on capacity, trending, data, and analytics.
CloudForms collects and tracks capacity, utilization, and performance metrics including:
- Clusters
- Resource pools
- Hosts
- Virtual machines
- Appliances
- Virtual networks
- CPU capacity, reservations, and utilization
- Memory capacity, reservations, and utilization
- CPU-ready wait times
- Network I/O
- Disk I/O
Policy based controls
CloudForms offers policy-based control and is automated across:
- VM configuration and operation events (e.g., VM start, stop, and migrate)
- Virtual infrastructure (VI) configuration and operation events (e.g., connect or disconnect host, place host in maintenance mode, or re-boot)
- On-demand and scheduled VI and VM management tasks
Storage
Storage utilization information is combined with state analysis of VMs, virtual appliances, VM snapshots, and configuration files. It is also correlated with configuration information (e.g., classification, VM events, relationship, and dependency mapping) and infrastructure changes. This enables organisations to:
- Track storage utilization by resource type.
- Track VM disk usage and detect wasteful over-allocation or dangerous under-allocation that will create operational problems.
- Identify and analyse unregistered VMs for removal, remediation, and quarantine.
- Identify LUNs (Logical Unit Number) with heavy I/O activity.
Pro-active management of storage through IT policies to:
- Automatically age and retire VMs to reduce storage costs.
- Automatically delete or dismiss snapshots to reclaim space.
- Enforce allocation of storage quotas to assure cost of service.
- Migrate VMs to appropriate storage location to balance LUN I/O.
