Minimum Wage

In Australia the national minimum wage is currently AU$17.29 per hour or AU$656.90 per 38 hour week (before tax). Casual employees covered by the national minimum wage also get at least a 25 per cent casual loading.

Unfortunately in the US minimum wage is far lower at federal rate of US$7.25, essentially adults on minimum wage are working poor. The government's definition of poverty is based on total income received and does not include non-cash supplements such as food stamps or public housing.For example, the poverty level for 2014 was set at $23,850 (total yearly income) for a family of four:
