SQL Server 2016 will be coming to Linux mid 2017, it will be available for Red Hat, Ubuntu or as a docker image. This is great news, finally a commercially supported yet low cost database with advanced features coming to Linux. Microsoft is being pragmatic, CEO Satya Nadella said after the quarterly report: “The enterprise cloud opportunity is massive. It’s larger than any market we’ve ever participated in.” Yet as cloud devops projects are mostly done with open source databases is this announcement too little too late?
This is now a full circle for SQL Server as it originally started on UNIX from Sybase database and is now coming back home to UNIX/Linux.
