This means that all of VMware’s infrastructure software like vSphere, VSAN and NSX will soon run on AWS. The service is currently in its technology preview phase and an invite-only beta will start in early 2017 and the service will likely come out of beta in mid-2017.
“It’s the best of private cloud and the best of public cloud to bring [customers] the best of both worlds,” VMware Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger said in a press conference in San Francisco. All of VMware’s infrastructure software, including vSphere, its VSAN storage software and NSX networking software will run on AWS when it comes out of a beta test mode in mid-2017. “This is a win-win-win — a win for VMware, a win for Amazon, a win for customers,” Gelsinger said in an interview after the event.
Great features (if you choose to use NSX networking):
Great features (if you choose to use NSX networking):
- vMotion from on-premise vSphere to AWS without change of IP address or outage
- Elastic DRS, automatically move workloads to AWS
This essentially makes it a no brainer to move VMware VMs to AWS and kills more expensive VMware's vCloud Air which has virtually no add on services. So on AWS you will have a choice of native AWS services or vSphere APIs...this is quite different to AWS networks (VPCs/subnets/NACLs/SGs/ELBs) or use vSphere NSX.
