https://aws.amazon.com/outposts/
AWS Outpost comes in two flavors:
- VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts allows you to use the same VMware control plane and APIs you use to run your infrastructure,
- AWS native variant of AWS Outposts allows you to use the same exact APIs and control plane you use to run in the AWS cloud, but on-premises.
AWS will deliver the racks of servers, storage and networking to customers, install them if customers want, and handle their maintenance and replacement. Essentially, the Outposts will be an extension of a customer’s Amazon Virtual Private Network, which allows companies to use AWS resources in a virtual private network, and customers can connect from the Outposts to the rest of their applications in AWS or to any other AWS service. You can order one or more servers, or quarter, half, and full rack units. AWS assure it will have competitive price, Amazon cloud chief Andy Jassy said "Customers ultimately want the lowest possible prices".
To be available mid 2019. Microsoft also offer on-rem solution with Azure Stack which is delivered via partners such as Dell, HPE, Oracle. If AWS Outpost it is competitive in cost this could be major disruption especially for traditional IT vendors, this is especially true AWS Outpost is the preferred solution by VMware.
