AWS Outpost - 48% higher price than EC2

AWS Outposts is an on-premise offering for customers that needs to remain on premises or in countries where there is no AWS region. It is fully managed and supported by AWS. Outpost is delivered, installed, monitored, patched, and updated by AWS.

AWS Outpost is now available in:
  • NA - US
  • EMEA - All EU countries, Switzerland, and Norway
  • APAC - Australia, Japan, and South Korea.
With AWS Outposts you can run Amazon EC2, Amazon EBS, container-based services such as Amazon EKS, database services such as Amazon RDS on AWS Outposts and analytics services such as Amazon EMR on premises. Amazon S3 for AWS Outposts will be available in 2020 for local object storage on Outposts.

This is amazing for customers that need:
  • low latency
  • highly regulated industries and countries with data sovereignty requirements
  • customer that have requirements to owns the responsibility for physical security and access controls
Pricing example - 11 x m5.24xlarge + 11TB - all upfront US$:
  • 3 yr AWS Outpost pricing: $738,314 + cost for data center/power/cooling (est 36 x $1,000) + cost for networking/internet (est 36 x $500) = $792,314
  • 3yr North Virginia EC2 reserved instance m5.24xlarge = 11 x $46,482 + 36 months x 11,000GB x $0.10/GB = $550,902
AWS Outpost in our example is 48% more expensive than AWS EC2 and it requires more management. As such I would only recommend it to ciustomers that have requirements for on-premise infrastructure.
