Transgrid to use Tesla batteries in Sydney trial

Transgrid, the NSW transmission monopoly, will install Tesla Powerpack batteries at sites around NSW to help smooth the intermittent supply of wind and solar energy and trial "demand response" – a method of avoiding blackouts and moderating prices. 

The first installation of a relatively small 250 kilowatt, 500KW/h Powerpack will be at the City of Sydney's Alexandra Canal Works depot in the coming months. Transgrid awarded a contract to Tesla to supply Powerpacks to several sites last year, and plans to use the installation to trial the use of batteries in demand management.

Tesla says that grid-scale battery system will provide the depot with savings in energy costs while also boosting the City of Sydney’s carbon reduction efforts, as it aims for cuts of 70 per cent by 2030.

Interesting that Tesla Powerpack station will be located at Alexandra Canal Works depot which is right next to Equinix SY3 Data Centre where AWS is rumored to be located:
