Primer:
  • Set camera to manual mode
  • Set focus to manual and focus on infinity
  • Use tripod, turn off image stabilisation
  • Use raw rather than jpeg
  • Set ISO reasonably high (on my Nikon D7200 I use ISO 3200)
  • Set aperture to widest available (ideally f2.8 or faster)
  • Use 500 rule for shutter speed to avoid star trails. The 500 rule is a simple formula, for example for Nikon crop sensor with 16mm DX lens: 1.5 (crop) X 16 = 24 | 500/24 = 20 seconds
  • Use self-timer or remote to open shutter
  • Take around 8 to 12 exposures
Post processing:
  • Use Sequator to create single image
  • Use Lightroom/Luminar to adjust. For example raise the clarity in the sky, increased the contrast, bumped up the exposure just a touch, apply lens correction, which I probably should have done before anything else, try “dehaze” feature to bring out some more detail.
Mobile phone astrophotography:
  • Use mobile tripod
  • Set camera to pro mode
  • Set focus to manual and focus on infinity
  • Use raw rather than jpeg (if possible)
  • Set ISO reasonably high 1600 or 2500
  • Set shutter to 30 seconds
